I chose this poem because it portrays the themes of Death, Loneliness, Sorrow and the outcome of wars. On a personal level, discussing theses themes gives me a better understanding of conflicts and how to resolve to them. The other reason why I chose "Homecoming' was because it challenged me to think of the squandered lives of many young men at war and how many of us ignore the vitality of life.

The chronology of Child Story corresponds to the time in which Handke lived in West Germany (1965-1969 and 1971-1973) and in Paris (1969-1971). Handke then traveled in the United States, as does Sorger in The Long Way Around. The following year Handke traveled around Europe; some of this trip surfaces in The Lesson of Mont-Sainte-Victoire. Handke finally returned to Austria and settled in Salzburg, and Beyond the Villages takes place entirely in Austria. The homecoming, however, is fraught with family tension. Handke brings back to Austria a concept of home that explodes nationalism. Home is no longer a village; rather, the village (or city, or country) is part of the world. This is the message of Über die Dörfer, or “beyond the villages.”

I enjoyed "Homecoming" because it was about historical reality that plays back in the present tense. The Vietnamese War was real and is now history; however, the ritual of finding some of the dead corpses lost in wars and bringing them home, still happens today. I also enjoyed the poem because the poet had communicated his message clearly, which was, to draw forth a direct reply from me to make an effort to get into his shoes and analyse his purpose of composition.

HOMECOMING Bruce Dawe Bruce Dawe writes of his experiences in the Vietnam War in the poem "Homecoming". By using many different language techniques he conveys his sadness and sympathy for the loss of the lives of the young soldiers. Repeated use of the pronoun "they're", hints at the impersonal relationship between the bodies and their handlers. Repetition of the suffix "-ing" in "bringing", "zipping", "picking", "tagging", and "giving", describing the actions of the body processors, establishes irony. These verbs imply life and vitality, in stark contrast to the limp, lifeless, cold body that they handle each day. Repetition is used effectively to highlight the shocking brutality that has manifested in all wars throughout history. It is shocking that "they're giving them names" since a name is one of the few identifying features left on the plethora of otherwise anonymous, mutilated bodies. Dawe then writes of how the soldiers are 'tagged' and the seemingly unsympathetic way that the soldiers are classified - 'curly-heads, kinky-hairs, crew-cuts, balding non-coms'. This, however, is not to show the classifying of the soldiers as cold and unsympathetic, but rather to emphasize that the class, race etc.
